Description
Exquisitely Ornamental Pierced Islamic Geometric Metal Work Nineteenth Century through the Twenties Brass Floor Lamp Base - Only 12" High (the lamp was probably as high as 5') Non-electrical / Unwired - in great condition - none of the piercing is broken Covered all over with Arabic calligraphy and complicated geometrical piercings The geometrical cartouches are all different - no two are the same A few very minor dents - no broken metal Islam prohibits human depictions and this taboo has cultivated the most amazing artistry of calligraphic - geometric design from mosque architecture to home furnishings and books This gorgeous piece has been hanging upside down as a "flower pot" from my ceiling - I rigged it inside a heavy duty macrame plant holder with lots of peacock feathers - it hung upside down for many decades It measures 12" from top to bottom 19" in diameter at the base and 3" at the narrow top where it had been cut off from the original floor lamp Could use light cleaning but the patina is beautiful This is from a huge collection of items from my father's shop in Brooklyn which closed several decades ago. "Old Brassware" was located on Coney Island Ave near Dorchester Rd. in Flatbush and my father bought large amounts of architectural metal from old NYC buildings as they were torn down or renovated during the 1960s and 70s. Everything I sell is from a strictly non-smoking environment I will definitely accept returns only if I have incorrectly described the item I respond quickly to all inquiries Items will be mailed promptly within a day in clean and securely wrapped boxes or postal envelopes
